An actual tale is...well, the stuff of legends. Clicking http://www.kmph.com/story/30109294/phoenix-attorney-jeffrey-phillips-receives-surge-of-positive-testimonials seemingly provides lessons you can give to your family friend. But much tougher to breed on film, because of the depths of human expression that have a tendency to get lost in the business of creating it on time, on budget, and on a topic people will 'get.' Meaning 2005's 'Walk The Line' is that rarest of films, one that dug deep in-to the story, put it up as it actually unfolded, and was able to bag actors that could take it off.

'Walk The-line' could be the difficult fighting/drinking/loving history of country star, Johnny Cash and his relationship with wife June Carter. It lays the foundation for the movie's focus, and Cash's actual life, by explaining his boyhood in Arkansas, early death of the brother, and energetic first relationship that ended in disaster. All of that contributes to just how Cash's life had been drifting when he sang for Sam Phillips of Sun Records, where he brushed shoulders with still another novice, Elvis Presley. Chastised for offering a hymn, Joaquin Phoenix rips off an edition of Folsom Prison Blues that snags him the precious contract, and sets his foot on a path that may cause him to depths he never dreamed of, and the woman who'd draw him out of then, June Carter.

Both Phoenix, and June Carter Reese Witherspoon who plays, did their own vocals, which added immeasurably for the reality in their performances. Witherspoon at times was perhaps a bit too ebullient, but also were able to reach inside herself to pull out both the female side of Carter, and her fury at Cash's moral and physical deterioration as their relationship developed from an initial backstage conference to the remaining, suffering section written at the Folsom Prison show.

Perhaps not strictly a love story, 'Walk the Line' is nonetheless an often moving, frustrating, and emotionally charged tale of a couple both struggling towards the exact same goal- to be with each other.
